Birthday Month!

January 13, 2012

So I will probably mention this more than once but it’s my birthday month! Yes I was born on January 1st, a New Year’s baby and before you think it, it’s not as cool as it seems (that’s another story). I do really enjoy birthdays so I like to claim the whole month as mine since it falls on the first of the month. This year is especially exciting because my little handmade business celebrates it’s 1st birthday this month! I am thinking of some fun ways to celebrate so make sure you come back later in the month (or sooner) to check things out.

What I really wanted to share was the goofy birthday present my mom got for me. I had sent a link around to either her or my sister of a watch I had had my eye one. It’s been so long since I’ve worn a watch and just in case my phone dies again and I have an appointment I’ll have a backup plan. While I was with my mom we went out to eat and she gave me my presents to open. This is what I found:

She included some money too of course, she had doubts as to whether I was really going to like the watch and thought it better to just let me get it on my own. Probably a good idea since I have changed my mind. When I finally get around to ordering one I’ll share and you can tell me what you think.

She also gave me a “gift certificate” with money on the back and can be used at the spa I like and it’s redeemable for cash, get it?! Hahaha. She’s a goof and l love her!

Winter Snow

I was born and raised and Michigan but now I live in Texas and one of the things I miss most about winter is the snow. I don’t necessarily miss digging my car out of a snow bank and having it creep into my boots and up my sleeves but I miss the magical feeling when snow is falling. I miss the stillness of a cold winter night with fresh fallen snow that has been nearly untouched. I miss making snowballs and throwing them at nothing in particular. I miss all the possibilities that snow holds.

So far this winter it hasn’t gotten all that cold and we’ve had no snow at all. This made me even more excited to go home for Christmas and see my first winter snow. Sadly the ground was not covered in a blanket of white but there was snow in the forecast and my fingers were crossed that this would not change. Late into the evening of my second night in Michigan is started to snow! It was coming straight down and it was pretty magical indeed. All the Christmas lights on the street were lit and with the snow falling I felt like I was in a snow globe. I stood outside for a bit, mesmerized, until the cold got to me and I had to go cozy up inside.

It snowed on one other day while I was home so I suggested a walk through the woods. It’s so peaceful in the woods behind my dad’s house. It’s full of dead ferns from the fall and all sorts of evergreen trees and various hardwoods. My favorite spot is this little stream that runs across the walking path. It had iced over but you could see the water running and bubbling underneath. I could have spent the whole day here just relaxing and enjoying the quite woods. Just me and my thoughts.

What I Wore Wednesday-DIY

(Linking up with The Pleated Poppy)

A few months ago I purchased a rather unattractive dress for $1 at a garage sale. I tried it on and it fit me but the style of the dress was so unflattering. Normally I would have just passed it by but I loved the pattern so much and I could see a lot of potential for it to be a really cute mini dress. Also for a dollar I couldn’t really go wrong. Worst case scenario I’m out a buck. I took a few before pictures. The worst part was the strange collar tie.

First I removed the collar and then I opened up the seems to make more of a boat neck so that the dress didn’t feel as if it were choking me. I had to cut off part of the zipper in the back and add some large pleats in the back and front to account to the extra fabric. I then finished up all the seams that needed finishing around the neck. Then I drastically shortened the length of the skirt. Before it was nearly to my ankles so I took it up a few inches above my knees. I was going for a mini dress look, kind of mod. I had thought about shortening the sleeves but then decided to leave them as is. Here is the final product.
