How i got here-part 3

November 30, 2012

Here is part 3 of how I got here. To catch up here is part 1 and part 2.

So that’s how it went. Katie stayed up at her school and I carried out the original plan. I got a job at a health food store in town (cashiering and stocking shelves). I worked during the day and baked, knitted, watched movies, and hung out with friends by night. I made a few new friends at work and would tell them elaborate stories about my life to make the time pass as we worked. I was quite the comedian. Anyhow, overall, I wasn’t doing a whole lot and was not in a job that challenged me or even came close to using the degree I had earned. There was nothing wrong with working at the health food store but I knew I was to be somewhere else. I would feel like this even more when, on occasion, my math advisor would come into the store.

With very little direction and feeling pretty down about where I was in my life I began talking to Katie and thinking about my next move. She would be applying to graduate schools and deciding where she would be living for the next few years and I announced that wherever she ended up going I would come along.  Maybe what I needed was a big move! Plus this way we could live together like we had planned.

The decision for her came down to Madison, WI and Austin, TX. Originally I was hoping for Madison because it was close to home and was still in the Midwest. Turned out the program in Austin was better for Katie so that is where she chose. So Austin it was! I was moving to Austin with my best friend.

At the end of the spring I quit my job and moved back home for the summer. I figured I better save all the money I could because I had no idea what to expect when I got to Austin. I did as much as I could ahead of time though. I scoured the internet for jobs and found one that looked promising. It was an after-school position with Citizens Schools. It sounded like a lot of work but it sounded rewarding and interesting which is just what I needed.

Throughout the summer I was in the process of interviewing for the job, Katie and I were doing our best to find a place to live but decided it would be nearly impossible until we were actually there, and we had decided to take just her car and pack only what would fit. We were both very calm about the move and just really excited for this new adventure.

Be sure to come back next Friday for part 4. Have a great weekend!

Hello seattle i’m here

September 5, 2012

I’m in Seattle now! Yesterday was such a crazy day. I woke up at 4 in the morning to get ready and head to the airport with all of my heavy bags. After 5 and a half hours of flying I arrived in Seattle where Walker sneaked up on my in the airport and gave me a big hug. We then drove to the apartment. Our friends who just moved out to Eugene, OR from Texas had been visiting Walker for the weekend. There was just enough time to have a coffee (or spiced cider in my case) and plan out Thanksgiving before they had to head off.

Back at the apartment I looked around, it being the first time I had seen it in person, and checked things out. I was also really tired from flying all day and hungry and rather overwhelmed to be now living in Seattle. Yesterday was a big day emotionally and physically (perhaps still just a little bit today), there was a lot to take it. This is the big city kids. A lot bigger than Austin and a whole heck of a lot bigger than my small town in Michigan. It’s going to take a fair amount of getting used to. I’m excited and terrified at the same time. Ha!

I would have been content to just fall asleep as soon as I got to town but instead we played frisbee in the park, had brunch at a pretty neat little restaurant (of which there are so many), went grocery shopping, stumbled upon a place that sells herbs so we got all the root herbs to make root beer, and then finally went home to make dinner together for the first time in our new place. It was a pretty fun day too and boy was I happy when I finally layed my head on the pillow to fall asleep. What will the coming days bring?

Summer is nearing it’s end

August 14, 2012

Living in Michigan it was always a bummer to see the first leaves starting to change around mid August. It meant the summer was over and that school would soon be starting. Once I was done with school this didn’t seem to bother me as much since I do indeed love the fall, especially when it didn’t mean school was starting.

This summer I’ve been living in Michigan spending time with my family before relocating again to Seattle. Previously I’ve been in Texas where this slow change basically does not take place. At least not in Austin anyhow. The last few days I’ve been scouring the tree line just daring a leaf to be red, yellow, or orange. At first I saw nothing and would be glad that the dog days of summer were still upon us. Then it happened. I didn’t notice the first tree but my dad pointed it out to me. There is was starting to change colors. You know when you notice one then you start to see them everywhere? Yep, the trees are starting to change and yes that means summer is coming to a close.

This year, for me, that means heading out to Seattle. I have just 3 weeks left in Michigan and I’m sure they will fly by! I have much more excitement about the summer ending because I get to be with Walker in Seattle but like everything with an ending I find sadness in it. As the leaves continue to change I’ll be preparing for my change also. I have a few more fun things planned and then it’s packing and sorting before I fly on out of here. To the rest of summer!

P.S. My next few posts may be photo less. Between all my flitting about between this parent and that and this city and that I left my camera chord at my dad’s. Oy! I also have a giveaway I want to do but that will probably have to wait until next week. I’ll keep you posted!
