Finally Some Sewing

April 17, 2012

I was thinking the other day how it’s been a loooong time since my sewing machine has been out. A few days after that I was biking home (the weather was lovely) past my favorite spot on campus (I will try and take pictures one of these days). Seriously it’s such a cute spot! Its this flat spot on top of a hill that you can take stairs to get to and if you saw it you would say this is where we picnic. Anyhow the combination of perfect weather and biking by my favorite picnic spot I thought I must have a picnic and soon! And what does one need for a picnic, well that’s easy, a picnic placemat (and the wanting to sew comes full circle). I raced home and pulled out my favorite sewing book, Simple Sewing by Lotta Jansdotter. I have had this book for years and I adore all the of the projects, they are so modern, simple, and easy to sew. I have also wanted to make the picnic placemat for years and finally I was going to do it. This was good timing on my part because the pattern suggests you make 2 at once and I happened to have a friends birthday party that weekend. Perfect! I finished both of them in about 3 hours split between 2 days. Isn’t it great what you can do when you put your mind to it!?

You should! Most of the projects are perfect for beginners and they are so cute! I’m made the waist apron, the oven mitt (I made in 2007 and still use today), the wallet, and now the picnic placemat.

oh that is SO cute! my mom gave me her first sewing machine at christmas, but its still in the fedex box, sitting by my couch. she gave me a lesson on how to use it when i was home in NC for xmas, but i haven’t had time to fully play around with it yet – stupid school! this summer, though, i plan to play around with it more!

For sure! I think you’ll have fun exploring! I could see you liking this book. She has some easy projects to start out with, like tea towel and I know you like those! 🙂
