Road trip home

July 4, 2012

After my going away party I had one more day in Austin. I went to work and said bye to all of my coworkers, picked up the U-haul trailer I’d be towing all my things in, moved everything and packed it all once again, and took in my last night in Austin sitting on the porch with my dad and Katie. It was nice to have the last night be sort of quiet and reflective. It was perfect.

The next morning I threw the last few items in the car and said a quick goodbye to Katie so I wouldn’t get too sad and my dad and I were off, on our way back to Michigan. It took us 3 days driving about 8-9 hours per day. I say us but I should be saying my dad since I didn’t do any of the driving. When I wasn’t sleeping though I provided some company. We listened to books on tape, ate really awful road food, and I worked on some knitting projects. All of the motels we stayed at were dog friendly which was good since my dad’s German Shepard Mago was along for the ride. Surprisingly, despite being right off the freeway, they weren’t so bad. The first one had a little lake behind it with a trail. It’s called Mammoth lake since apparently they found a Mammoth there while building the freeway. The second, in Cloverdale, IN, looked out onto some sort of farming field. It was pleasant.

Despite the fairly smooth drive and not so seedy motels after 3 days we were more than ready to be at our destination. We celebrated by having some Michigan wine out on the porch and listing to the whippoorwill do it’s thing.

Texas recap-moving day

June 22, 2012

Hey friends! If you are just joining me today I should let you know that I am revisiting the early times of being in Texas. I moved here almost 4 years ago and now my time here is ending. I thought it would be fun to revisit the past before moving on.

As I mentioned in previous posts Katie and I didn’t have a lot planned out when we arrived in Austin. We kept calm though and things really worked out well for us. We found a place to live on the 2nd or 3rd day if I remember correctly. That first apartment served us well. It had a pool, it was really close to a bus stop, we both had our own bathrooms, and it was in a quiet neighborhood despite being a larger complex. After living there for the first year we decided we were ready to find something a little nicer and with some character.

We ended up finding the perfect place in Hyde Park that we both loved. There was tons a light and lots of room and we still had our own bathrooms. Of course moving in never glamorous so I didn’t really document that but what I really remember about this day was how much fun we had once it was over.

Walker (we hadn’t been dating all that long at this point) and a friend of his helped Katie and I move and then after we got burgers, fries, and milkshakes and ate on a lovely patch of grass enjoying the cool night air. Then we drove around with the windows down and the wind blowing our hair everywhere. It was a blast. We laughed and honestly I really don’t remember how much moving sucked. I only think about this part of the night and laughing in the car and eating that yummy food that was so well deserved.

This transition phase

June 15, 2012

I’m in a transition phase right now. I just got back from Seattle and I’m leaving Texas at the end of the month. I’m ready to go but I have 2 weeks until that happens. My roommate and I moved out of our wonderful apartment at the end of May and she actually took over Walker’s 1 bedroom apartment. It just made sense that I would stay there with her until I left. So now this 1 bedroom apartment is full of all of our things.

It only made sense for Katie to take over the bedroom since she’ll be staying for a year or 2 so I set up a temporary camp in the living room. I tried my best to make it cozy but since it’s hard to cram so much stuff in a small space it’s a bit hectic and maybe not the best sleeping space. Especially since I’m also surrounded by my work and work space. It’s also a bit frustrating since I keep realizing I’ve packed away things I need right now and the last thing I want to do is go digging for them in boxes stuffed in a closet. So I guess I will be going belt free for now.

So this is my life right now and I wanted to share.

Next week I have a little idea in mind that I’m pretty excited about. I thought since I’m leaving Texas soon it would be fun to recap my experience here since I wasn’t blogging at that time. I will be sharing pictures, stories, maybe feelings and so on. So check in next week! Happy Friday!
