Speaking up

February 28, 2013

I have a bad habit of not speaking up sometimes. I can be easily talked into things by nice people and end up spending money I would rather not have. Let me explain.

The other day while I was downtown I stopped at Nordstroms to return some boots that didn’t fit and decided to check out some makeup while I was there. I was looking for a bright pink for spring. At one of the makeup counters they were having a little event where they’d do your makeup as long as you purchased something. I was planning on getting a lipstick anyway and it sounded fun.

I had two really nice makeup stylists do up my lips, my eyes, and even bronze me. It looked nice but it certainly is not my everyday look. I guess there was some promotion that if you spend $100 you’d get blush/bronzer for free (a value of $40). So the nice makeup artist picked out $100 of product for me and took me to the counter. The whole time in my head I’m having a conversation that looks like this: oh man I don’t need all of this makeup-I don’t want a makeup brush that costs $50 nor do I need it-well I guess it would be fun-I suppose I could buy it all-I do get the free makeup and that’s a good value-but no all I want is the lipstick-oh jeeze. Seriously my “it’s ok” conversation almost won when I finally said I’ll just take the lipstick. They seemed a little irritated but how would I feel if I left with way more than I needed/wanted and spent way more than I wanted/was planning? I would have felt really bad. So I’m glad I spoke up and I’m happy with just the lipstick.

Homemade italian style pizzas

February 27, 2013

Last night I made 2 really delicious Italian style pizzas and I hardly had to do anything. The most lengthy aspect of the whole process was cutting the vegetables. All the recipes were from my Jim Lahey My Bread book.

For the dough you basically mix the ingredients and let them sit for 2 hours, separate into 2 balls, they sit for another half hour and then you spread them across the pan. I’ve seen other fast pizza crusts but they usually are not super tasty and end up pretty chewy. This crust is pretty thin and baked at 500 degrees ensures it’s crusty. Mmm perfection.

I used a combination of 3 different traditional Italian style pizzas. The first one was pizza pomodoro. The second a combination of pizza funghi and pizza radici di sedano (celery root pizza). It was hard to pick a favorite. I don’t even like mushrooms and I had a whole piece of the funghi pizza-it was that good. {I’ll admit I even had a piece for breakfast this morning}.

I might make these the next time we have guests. I think they’d be really impressed and think I worked super hard in the kitchen. Shh don’t tell!

{On a side note, I’ve been trying to cut back animal proteins from our meals so I’ve been making a lot of vegan dishes. Both of these pizzas are vegan! Yahoo!}

At the library

February 26, 2013

After meeting a friend downtown the other day I decided to hang around and visit the central library. It’s crazy! There are 10 floors full of materials and really interesting architectural details. I spent about 2 hours there roaming each floor and choosing books and movies to take home. It’s a pretty great place to get lost and spend the afternoon. The best part were all the pops of color around.
