A knitted baby blanket

August 7, 2013

A few months ago I found out my sister is going to have a baby! A little while later I found out she is having a boy. Sometime after that while I was visiting home I felt him kick for the first time, I was the first of anyone to feel him after my sister of course. It was a pretty special moment. I’m going to be an aunt and I’m so excited! She told me as soon as she could so I could start knitting.

I had a few projects in mind but I was most excited about making the baby blanket. I used this pattern by Purl Bee and cascade superwash 220. When I was nearly done I had this weird moment of envisioning the future when he would be all grown up and we’d look at his baby blanket together and reminisce about when aunt Jessica made it for him. It was weird and touching all at once.

I finished up the blanket and packaged up a few other things to send to my sister so she could open them during her shower. Sadly I couldn’t be there but we facetimed at the end of the party and she opened my gifts. It wasn’t quite like being there but at least we had that. I thought it would be more important for me to be there when he’s born so I’m saving my ticket for then. It’s hard being away from home and missing so much.

I still have a few more projects to work on but I have about 2 1/2 months to get them done. Ready, set, knit!

July project complete

August 6, 2013

I can’t believe it’s August already! These monthly projects seem to be flying by! It’s crazy! If you haven’t been following along I decided at the beginning of the year to pick a theme a month and document it in some way. For January I wore red lipstick every day. For February I styled my hair a different way every day. For the month of July I decided to take a picture of a stranger a day.

It was actually easier than I figured it would be. The iphone with the sound off can be pretty stealthy. Most of the pictures are strangers and a few were strangers until we introduced ourselves (friends from ALT). Anyhow here is a collage of all the stranger pictures.

For the last month of summer I decided I would do some sort of exercise each day. That includes, but is not limited to stomach exercises, work outs in the park, free yoga in the park, bike riding, long walks around the neighborhood. I figured it would be a healthy way of making sure I’m staying fit and enjoying what’s left of the summer weather. Woo!

Are you with me? What do you have planned for the last month of summer?

Berry monday: muffins

August 5, 2013

Welcome to the second berry Monday! Before I share how I used some of these berries I wanted to introduce you to all the berries that are featured in upcoming recipes.

berry introduction

First on my recipe list are muffins! I used the following berries:

Blueberries:

Tayberries:

Boysenberries:

For the muffins I used a basic fat free vegan muffin recipe that also uses whole wheat pastry flour (fat free means you’ll usually see applesauce in place of oil in the recipe). You can also find a traditional basic muffin recipe if you prefer. I then split the recipe into thirds. To 1/3 I folded in about a 1/3 cup of blueberries, to the next 1/3 I folded in 1/3 cup of tayberries, and then the final 1/3 was pretty exciting. Since the boysenberries are so large I put a little bit of batter on the bottom of the muffin liner, I placed a berry on top, and covered it with batter making what I hoped would be a berry center filled muffin. Each berry mixture made 4 muffins for a total of 12.

They were delicious and my berry filled muffin was a success!
