These pictures make it look like the middle of summer but these are from our trip to Michigan in September. The weather was a bit all over the place but we got a few beautiful days of sunshine and warmth. We had planned to head up to my uncle’s cabin in the upper peninsula for some truly restful days and boy did we get lucky. His cabin is wonderful and this is only the second time I’ve been and I was really excited we were able to fit it in the schedule.

The cabin is relatively remote and situated on top of a bluff. It’s a one room log cabin that has an octagonal shape and is pretty rustic. Perhaps one of the best features is the sauna on site. There is no running water in the cabin but my uncle built a sauna for bathing in the Finnish style. A wood stove heats both the room and the water that is attached to it. On my first visit to the cabin it was a very cool fall evening and the sauna was just what I needed. This time around it was warmer but we still took advantage of it.

We explored in the woods a bit. Walker tried fishing and I tried panning for gold. We both failed but we are also both pretty impatient. Finally we decided sitting on the deck of the cabin and drinking a beer would be the best way to spend the day. And I’m pretty sure it was. In the evening we looked at the stars and tried yet again to figure out if we were looking at constellations.

After a couple of really nice days in the woods we hopped back in the car and got Walker to the airport just in time. Our mad dash to the airport was totally worth spending one extra night and it all worked out just fine. Although I was sort of secretly wishing Walker would miss his flight so he could stay one more day. Hehe…

Braided crown with Vera

October 13, 2014

Recently I got to have my hair styled into a braided crown courtesy of Vera. I met the ladies behind Vera a couple of months ago and they were in the process of setting up a site that brings hair stylists and make up artists into your home instead of having to go to the salon. It was described to me as the airbnb of beauty care. It sounded pretty amazing to me just thinking about all the time you could save by having someone come to you instead of the other way around. Not only that but there being a dedicated site to replace all of the guess work and the calling around.

To really jump start the business they were offering complimentary services to introduce the concept to people and get some honest feedback. I was pumped to have a Professional Hair stylist come to my home and create some hair magic. Especially since I have super straight and slick hair.

It was super easy to prepare. I chose a hair style ahead of time and then a few minutes before my appointment I set a chair in front of the giant mirror in my living room and put a side table next to it. I also had a few candles going and some music in the background so it wasn’t so quiet.

When my hair stylist arrived we introduced ourselves and she took a few minutes to set up. She brought everything she needed and all I had to do was take a seat and enjoy. She assured me that despite my super sleek hair she could make the braided style I chose work for me. Yeah! Her trick: lots of dry shampoo and teasing. You should have seen how much body it gave my hair. Amazing! I have no idea why I still haven’t purchased that particular hair care product.

Anyhow once all the teasing was done the braiding happened pretty quickly. She sprayed it all down with some hairspray and done! I wore the braid all day and then slept in it. The back had come out a bit overnight so I took it half out and did a quick pinning of the rest in the back and wore it for another day. It was great! It was also pretty exciting to know that my hair can do more than I thought it could. Woo!

Thank you Ericka for such a fun and beautiful hair style and thank you Vera for setting it all up!

Earring Launch Part 2

September 30, 2014

Last week I introduced you to the new earring collection and I’m so excited for you to able to customize the sets and make then uniquely yours. When I was working on the earrings I decided I wanted to do a photo shoot to really give you a good idea of how they look on and a few ways they might be worn. It was my first photo shoot and I had a friend help me out. It wasn’t perfect and it was a lot of trial and error but I think we got a few good ones.
