We went squid fishing!

February 25, 2013

We had quite the adventure this weekend! I suggested to Walker we try our hand at fishing for squid off the public pier downtown. Neither of us have done this before nor do we have a ton of fishing experience in general but we made a plan and stuck to it. If anything it would be a adventurous outing.

First we biked to the outdoor store and picked up fishing poles, some tackle, and our licenses. We spent the afternoon watching a few videos online in preparation. We finally headed out around 6:30 or so (apparently the later the better but since we were biking we didn’t want to go too late). The bike ride there was rather fun, the last mile was on a bike path near the shore through a completely dark park. If I hadn’t had my head lamp it would have been a bit dangerous.

Finally we were at the pier. We walked down and chose a spot. Walker got our jigs strung up on the poles while I unpacked our snacks and took pictures. Then we cast into the water below. We had high hopes but quickly realized we didn’t know quite what we were doing but that was no matter-we were having fun. After a little while the wind picked up and it started to sprinkle. Our snacks were running low so we decided to pack it out. We finished the wine we brought along and headed back out on the dark path.

So we didn’t catch any squid. While it would have been rather rewarding and tasty we both agreed that the adventure of it all was what really mattered and that we enjoyed ourselves while doing it. Plus now we have poles for our next fishing adventure!

Taking some time

February 21, 2013

Two things I’ve really been enjoying this week. Taking some time for myself and cooking.

Yesterday I left the house with the intention of signing up for a few trial yoga classes. The studio was closed but right next store was a tea shop. I ordered a pot of tea and spent the next hour and a half reading magazines and drinking tea. It was lovely.

After my relaxing time at the tea shop I came home and started on dinner. The main course was a concoction of vegetables we had in our fridge with tempeh and garlic chips to top it off served or quinoa. The side was roasted sweet potatoes with maple syrup and toasted sesame seeds. I also threw together a salad with oranges, apples, pecans and a dressing of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, fresh squeezed orange juice, salt & pepper, and a dash of hot sauce.

Books and sun

February 20, 2013

The sun came out yesterday big and bright! This was a great thing because the day before I was in a mood, let me tell you. I practically threw a fit over basically nothing and I just couldn’t shake that feeling all day. We all have those days. I needed sleep and the sun the next day sure helped. I walked instead of biked to the post office and then sat in the little park near our apartment and read.

When I came back inside the sun was shining on my favorite part of the couch so I curled up like a cat and kept on reading. Then to top it all off I met Walker in the park when he got out of work and kicked the soccer ball around letting off any residual steam. I feel much better indeed!
