mother/daughter 13th annual camping trip-part 1

August 3, 2012

Wow it’s hard to believe my mom and I have been taking the same vacation now for 13 years! It never gets old though! We look forward to visiting familiar places and discovering new places. We jam pack our few days of “camping” to the brim. I say “camping” because, while we do sleep in tents, we sleep on cots and are able to use regular toilets and shower daily. That way when we head into the little towns to explore we look put together but we can still come back to camp and have a fire at night.

My vintage bike

July 20, 2012

You may think you recognize this green bike as it looks very similar to the green bike I was riding around Austin but it is in fact a different bike. My other green bike was made around the same year that this one was (1974 I believe) but it’s a women’s Schwinn Varsity. This beauty here is a Schwinn Collegiate. My dad picked up this bike and a matching (in color-it’s actually a Varsity also) men’s bike for a total of $10!! Can you believe it?! They both are outfitted with generator powered front and back lights, fenders, wheel covers, and bike racks. They are pretty great. I didn’t take her to Austin with me since she was a little too nice and so she lives at my dad’s house and whenever I get a chance to ride her I take it!

We had a nice time together the other day. The weather was perfect and I found a bike path along the water. The sun was out but it wasn’t too hot. Perfect.

My dad and I have plans later this summer to take our matching bikes to Mackinaw Island and ride around the whole island. I haven’t done that since I was a kid! I think I need to shop around for a bike basket so I can pack a little lunch. Any suggestions?

Ice cream in town

July 17, 2012

The other day my dad, Mago the dog, and I went into town for an ice cream. I’ve mentioned it before but our town is so super small. We got our ice creams and ate them out front and the entire time we were there we saw maybe 3 people and 1 car.

When we were little we used to ride our bikes into town to what used to be the candy store across from the gas station and general store (where we got our ice cream from). It was 3 miles into town and back then it felt like a whole day excursion. We were always so tired too because over half way there is a huge hill (huge at the time) and more often than not we’d be walking our bikes up the hill. As soon as we made it to the candy shop we were offered water and did our best to drink calmly and not act like we could hardly wait to start picking out our candy rations. After our candy was picked out and paid for we would eat some and pack the rest away for later and head back home. It always seemed to take longer on the way back since all of the anticipation was gone. Plus we were tired so we’d want to stop and rest a ton of times. Oh but those were good days!
