Speaking up

February 28, 2013

I have a bad habit of not speaking up sometimes. I can be easily talked into things by nice people and end up spending money I would rather not have. Let me explain.

The other day while I was downtown I stopped at Nordstroms to return some boots that didn’t fit and decided to check out some makeup while I was there. I was looking for a bright pink for spring. At one of the makeup counters they were having a little event where they’d do your makeup as long as you purchased something. I was planning on getting a lipstick anyway and it sounded fun.

I had two really nice makeup stylists do up my lips, my eyes, and even bronze me. It looked nice but it certainly is not my everyday look. I guess there was some promotion that if you spend $100 you’d get blush/bronzer for free (a value of $40). So the nice makeup artist picked out $100 of product for me and took me to the counter. The whole time in my head I’m having a conversation that looks like this: oh man I don’t need all of this makeup-I don’t want a makeup brush that costs $50 nor do I need it-well I guess it would be fun-I suppose I could buy it all-I do get the free makeup and that’s a good value-but no all I want is the lipstick-oh jeeze. Seriously my “it’s ok” conversation almost won when I finally said I’ll just take the lipstick. They seemed a little irritated but how would I feel if I left with way more than I needed/wanted and spent way more than I wanted/was planning? I would have felt really bad. So I’m glad I spoke up and I’m happy with just the lipstick.

At the library

February 26, 2013

After meeting a friend downtown the other day I decided to hang around and visit the central library. It’s crazy! There are 10 floors full of materials and really interesting architectural details. I spent about 2 hours there roaming each floor and choosing books and movies to take home. It’s a pretty great place to get lost and spend the afternoon. The best part were all the pops of color around.

We went squid fishing!

February 25, 2013

We had quite the adventure this weekend! I suggested to Walker we try our hand at fishing for squid off the public pier downtown. Neither of us have done this before nor do we have a ton of fishing experience in general but we made a plan and stuck to it. If anything it would be a adventurous outing.

First we biked to the outdoor store and picked up fishing poles, some tackle, and our licenses. We spent the afternoon watching a few videos online in preparation. We finally headed out around 6:30 or so (apparently the later the better but since we were biking we didn’t want to go too late). The bike ride there was rather fun, the last mile was on a bike path near the shore through a completely dark park. If I hadn’t had my head lamp it would have been a bit dangerous.

Finally we were at the pier. We walked down and chose a spot. Walker got our jigs strung up on the poles while I unpacked our snacks and took pictures. Then we cast into the water below. We had high hopes but quickly realized we didn’t know quite what we were doing but that was no matter-we were having fun. After a little while the wind picked up and it started to sprinkle. Our snacks were running low so we decided to pack it out. We finished the wine we brought along and headed back out on the dark path.

So we didn’t catch any squid. While it would have been rather rewarding and tasty we both agreed that the adventure of it all was what really mattered and that we enjoyed ourselves while doing it. Plus now we have poles for our next fishing adventure!
