We’ve been working on a lot of concoctions over here. The other night we began the process of making orange bitters. There are lots of different recipes and we chose to make 2 batches with one difference and then see if we can taste that difference (we toasted the spices for one). Basically we mixed a bunch of spices, a lot of orange peel, and vodka. That mixture sits for 2 weeks (where we are now) and then there are more steps to do. I’ll let you know how it goes…

Making root beer
September 7, 2012
I mentioned the other day that Walker and I stumbled into a neat little shop that sells all sorts of herbs and things. We picked up all the roots we needed to make some root beer and got the process going to other evening. It’s a little like making actual beer as in you need sugars, something to boil (in this case roots), and a starter. Then you let it ferment and bottle it which makes it bubbly. There are lots of options for starters and we chose bakers yeast which I’m thinking I won’t like too much. It’s a trial and error kind of thing though so we’ll just see how it tastes. I’m skeptical…but excited to try again. I love homemade root beer!
Earlier this year I got Walker a book called The Art of Fermentation and there all are sorts of different ideas in there. I’m sure I’ll be sharing more of our experiments along the way.
Catching up with friends
August 28, 2012
Hey! So I’m back to normal posting! I have my pictures uploaded finally and I have so much to share. This is my last week home so in less than a week I will be living in Seattle. I know Walker is beyond excited and most of me is too but I’m sad to be leaving my home yet again and all my family and friends. I’ve had such a great summer and I guess it’s only fitting it should also end when everyone heads back to school. I’m currently back at my dad’s (I said bye to my mom yesterday and that was pretty sad) and now I have the arduous task of deciding what to pack for the plane, what to mail, what to leave behind for another trip and what to plan get rid of. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. So let’s take a break from that and enjoy some lovely pictures from the summer.
I posted last week about meeting up with friends. Here are a few more pictures of my friends and me being silly, drinking local beers, and hitting up the dairy queen.
