Jewelry cleaning tips

March 6, 2014

I sometimes get asked the best way to clean certain types of jewelry so I’m going to share some of my tips. I tend to use more natural methods or thing around the house but if you have jewelry cleaner on hand that will work well.

The Toothpaste Method.

Works best for: Silver jewelry (not chains)

How: Take non-bleach toothpaste and wipe some onto a rag, cloth, or old toothbrush and rub jewelry. Once all the tarnish is gone, rinse and dry. If the tarnish is stubborn you may want to repeat.

The Foil/Baking Soda Method.

Works best for: Silver jewelry including chains and gold-filled jewelery

How: Place a piece of foil shiny side up at the bottom of a bowl. Place jewelry to be shined up on top and sprinkle with baking soda. Pour boiling water on top. It’s important that the jewelry be touching the foil. Repeat as needed. Use tongs to pull jewelry out, rinse, and dry.

If you just need to buff the jewelry I include a small polishing cloth with all of my orders to keep the piece looking shiny and new.

Note: 14k gold may never tarnish (how cool is that!) but if it needs a bit of shine I recommend a polish cloth.

Let me know if you have any questions about specific pieces and I’ll do my best to answer them. Do you have a great at home jewelry cleaning tip? If so please share in the comments below.

Bonus tips: I would recommend storing sterling silver in little plastic bags when not wearing. This helps to keep the air from tarnishing your pieces.

I got a request for a Nova Scotia necklace recently and I loved getting to make a new shape. It’s always interesting to make a country for the first time and see it take on a personality all it’s own. I hope it is well worn and enjoyed.

Working with moorea seal

July 22, 2013

A couple of months ago I attended a blogger event here in Seattle where I met Moorea Seal for the first time. We got to talking and she told me all about her new venture curating a shop full of handpicked items by some of her favorite designers and artists. When we exchanged business cards I told her what I do and showed off the tiny gold Michigan necklace I wear all the time. She seemed to be impressed that I do all my work by hand and said I might be a good fit for her new shop! Ah! I was so excited I and I told Walker all about it when I got home.

A little while later I got in contact with her and we worked out which items of mine she would carry in her shop and I got to work making 35 tiny gold necklaces. I’ll tell you my hands were pretty tired when I was done. It didn’t matter though because I was too excited. Once they were all packaged up I got the honor of dropping them off in person at the Moorea Seal studio here in Seattle. It was really cool seeing where all the magic is taking place.

So today I’m super excited for Moorea and her team because her shop officially went live today! There are so many cute things, and of course my necklaces are over there, so check it out! Go to Mooreaseal.com. Let me know if you buy anything. I’ve got my eye on a few items also…
