While my dad was visiting last month I suggested we head out to the Olympic peninsula since it had been on our list since we moved out here but hadn’t made the trek yet. I let my dad pick our location and I think we were all pretty pleased. The cabin itself didn’t have the charm that the Cama beach cabins had but it did have a wood stove, a fire pit outside, and we had our own private beach. The cabin wasn’t right along the water but it was perched up on top of a bluff which made for good water viewing.

While at the cabin we wandered the beach looking for oddities oh which there were plenty but mostly in the form of seaweed. Walker and I collected a handful each of tiny round rocks to take the place of marbles in the Chinese checkers game in the cabin. We were also there over Valentine’s weekend so I sent both Walker and my dad on scavenger hunt around the cabin. That was pretty funny.

We enjoyed fires inside and an outside fire by day in the rain with the sun shining which was a bit odd. We were also lucky enough to get a full moon on clear night. We explored the beach by moonlight, which I found to be a bit more ominous than by day. Walker talked me into walking to the end of a the rock barrier and when were we splashed by a wave at the end I was pretty much done with that. But I suppose I was glad I did it anyhow.

More adventures from this trip coming this week…

seattle won the superbowl

Remember when Seattle won the Superbowl? I’ve never lived in a city before now that had an NFL team so as Seattle neared the Superbowl I got pretty excited and for more than just the chips and salsa. Friends of ours hosted a party for the game and when it was pretty clear we were the winners we were pumped! We also knew that the city would be ecstatic! When the game was over we headed back to Capitol Hill where apparently the party was happening. Everyone was so excited and wanted to celebrate so they just headed out into the streets. People drinking, setting off fireworks (that was a little scary), chanting, throwing skittles and toilet paper in the air were blocking some of the main roads through the neighborhood. It was a little pointless but it didn’t seem to matter it was fun! We crowd watched for maybe an hour and while it was still before our bedtime we headed home (I kind of like Superbowl on the west coast).

Last day in SLC

February 7, 2014

Once the conference was over there were still quite a few people I wanted to chat with and say bye to. Luckily there was an informal conversation room set up where I got to do just that. I met a few new people and said bye to some friends I made during the conference such as Bobby.

After I had said my goodbyes I had to find my way to the Sundance Film Festival ticket booth to pick up my movie ticket for later that afternoon. I was excited to have enough time before I flew out to see a movie so that I could say I’ve been to Sundance. How fun! I chose Infinitey Polar Bear directed by Maya Forbes. The movie itself was emotional but I think after all the information and connections I made at ALT I was especially sensitive and basically cried throughout the entire movie-even during the Q&A after the movie with Maya and her husband. Needless to say I really enjoyed it.

After the movie I had enough time to grab my bags, head to the airport, get a little snack and a beer, and chat with Moorea Seal at the gate before heading back to Seattle. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful trip.
