5 knitted baby gift ideas

October 25, 2013

I’ve been missing for a few days but I can’t apologize because I’ve been distracted by the cutest baby boy ever! My sister had a boy 2 weeks ago today and I came to town to spend some time with them. I have some really cute pictures to share but for now I thought I would share some of the knitted items I made for my new nephew.

1. Baby hats. I made a few small ones and they are slightly bigger than his head so he has some room to grown. I also made a set of matching hats for him and his daddy (or mommy it fits my sister too).

2. Baby mittens. I made a plain version of this pattern from purl bee. These are a bit big for him now but they will be so cute when he gets a bit bigger.

3. Baby legwarmers. For the larger ones I used this pattern also from purl bee (they are one of my go to sites). Everyone had a good laugh about them because they are way too big for the baby right now so I made another pair that were about 1 inch across by 4 inches tall. They are really tiny but so are his legs right now! Too cute!

4. Baby moccasins. Pattern here. These are fun because you can add any design or pattern you want to the front. They are also pretty fast to knit up.

5. Baby blanket. This one is my favorite. It’s super cozy and plush but also really easy to knit even for a beginner and it makes a great gift. As they get older they could use it for a lap blanket. It’s fun to imagine them using it for years to come.

In the wee morning hours my sister became a mom and gave birth to this little fella. His name is Lincoln James and he weighs 6 pd and 10 oz and is 18 and 3/4″ long.

When I found out she was in labor yesterday I was totally surprised and shocked because that night I had a dream that she was going into labor and my mom called to tell me and when I woke up I thought well it’s still early but it would be crazy if she went into labor today. And she did! My mom called me in the afternoon to tell me. How about that?! My plane isn’t booked until the 22nd of this month so I thought I would be missing out on everything but my mom was in the room and we silently facetimed so I could be there for the delivery.

It was terrifying and exciting. It was at that moment I really appreciated technology because it was so special to be there and to hear his first cry and see him enter the world for the first time even though I’m thousands of miles away. I got to see her hold him for the first time, watch him get checked out and see his little tushy, watch as he got weighed and measured. All these special moments I thought I would miss out on I got to be there for and it was amazing.

Now I have to patiently wait 11 days until I can see him and hold him in person. Oh my I’m in love already.

We’re moving!

This week we are moving. I had a few posts planned but I’m pretty sure Walker packed my camera cord so I can’t download any photos. I guess that’s what happens when I turn my back on him. This moving with a partner thing is pretty new for me and one I’ve had a bit of a hard time with because of my wanting complete control.

When we first moved here Walker came first and I joined him later so we didn’t actually have to move together. This time all of our stuff is together and we have drastically different ways of packing. Mine is more controlled and like stuff gets packed with like stuff and there’s a method to it. Also I wrap my things and tape the bottom of my boxes. Walker on the other hand just throws stuff into boxes from wherever. If it needs to be packed it just goes in an unmarked box. He also insists that we just take everything and after we move then go through things and find what to get rid of. He also doesn’t tape the bottom of boxes.

As you can see we pack and move very differently. It’s been hard to not just get really frustrated (which I have) and blow up at him (which I have) but we have actually been able to calm down and actually discuss things. The result is both of us giving in a little. Walker thinking a little bit more about packing something and letting things go and me giving up some of the control and trusting Walker. Just because he does it differently doesn’t mean it’s wrong. As he reminded me earlier this week, he’s moved many time and it’s always worked out just fine. Alright, alright.

I’ll be back in a couple of days once I find that camera cord.
