Our first garden harvest

We moved into our new place last September and we were most excited for spring so we could start a garden. Truth be told we could have started a winter garden but I think with our limited gardening experience that may have been too advanced. In march, once it was warm enough for some hardier plants, we purchased some starts, made a few raised beds in the garden, planted them in the ground, and hoped for the best.

Being that we live in Seattle we rarely had to water them but we did go out every night with headlamps to pick the slugs off our tiny plants. All that slug picking paid off because our plants grew so big! After a few days of sun and a day of rain I realized everything looked big enough to collect our first harvest. We ended up with a giant bowl of kale, spinach, and arugula. I think we also ate some of everything with our meal that night. Perhaps it was just me but I think it all tasted a little better since we grew it right in our backyard. I can’t wait for a few of other plants to get big enough to eat. Having a garden is so exciting!

A washington wedding

May 21, 2014

Oh boy things have been quiet over here. We’ve been up to a lot of fun and I made the decision to blog a little less. I’m hoping to catch you up though so don’t worry!

A few weeks ago we attended a wedding in Washington of a friend that I met about 10 years ago in community college. We haven’t kept in touch a lot over the years so I was honored to be attending their very initiate wedding. They held it at one of the wineries about 25 minutes out of the city. As you may or may not know Walker and I don’t own a car so we had a bit of an adventure getting out there. We took 2 buses and then walked for about 2 miles. Luckily it was a beautiful day and I was so thankful the sun was out. I could have complained about our lack of car and the long bus ride and the long walk but instead I chose to think of it as an adventure that we were on together.

As we walked along the road together we joked about feeling like we were in a movie. My movie was obviously a romantic comedy. You know one where the car breaks down and the main characters argue but by the end are totally in love? Walker was thinking something more along the lines of a horror flick-to each his own. Ha!

The small wedding was really beautiful. The flowers were done by the mother and some of herĀ  friends. The cakes were all made by the bride’s sister. The multi-course dinner was from a Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle and it was some of the most interesting and tasty wedding food I’ve had. After we spent quite a while eating we finally got to dance! We danced our little hearts out (always my favorite part of any wedding). Oh and did I mention the wine was fabulous?! It was at a winery after all.

My mom’s first trip to seattle!

April 24, 2014

And I think it was a pretty good trip! The weather here was so nice! I don’t think it rained one time while she was here and it was sunny to boot! How about that?! We spent our time shopping, walking around the neighborhoods (finding the treasure tree and this really big tree), eating tasty donuts and food, and spending the weekend on an island in the Puget Sound-it doesn’t get much more northwest than that!

After that excitement my mom and I took the kayak out and paddled out in to the sound. We heard once we got out a little ways we would get a great view of Mt Rainier and oh boy we did! And just as my mom snapped a picture of it a seal popped his head out of the water. So cute!

It was nice to show her the city but spending the weekend on the island was so peaceful. We visited the same island back in December but in April it felt like a whole new place. Maybe it was all the sun! On the last day out there we spent the better part of the morning digging for geoducks in the rocky shore but we finally got one out of the sand! Good thing because my hands were getting so cold and I think we were all on the verge of giving up.

We went back to the city Sunday afternoon and we took my mom to one of our favorite restaurants in Capitol Hill for dinner. Then we got second dinner because she had to try some Pho! Haha! On her last full day in Seattle I took her to Jock and Jill to get some fitted running shoes and since it was another beautiful day we took a spontaneous paddle boat ride on Green Lake. It was a long day out so we kind of crashed at home and got mom ready to leave the next day. I’d say it was a pretty great first trip to Seattle but we left lots of things for next time. So when are you coming back mom?
