A and T’s pre wedding event

July 29, 2014

Yeah, yeah I’m talking about Austin again. I can’t help it. I’ve always been a stickler for chronology. Even when I was young and kept a journal I couldn’t write anything until I was caught up with my dates. It was frustrating and is a habit I still can’t shake. So here we are headed back to May and those 3 weeks I was in Austin.

My last week in town was basically a wedding week extravaganza. Our good friends Tom and Allyson flew in a week early to start wedding prep and to visit some of their favorite places. Early in the week I helped them with centerpieces (the adorable dinosaur planter below) and we got some tasty burgers while braving the torrential rain that was happening. The downpour lasted a couple of days and one night I actually had to check the backyard and make sure it wasn’t flooding. Here in Seattle I’m not used to such heavy rains. tom and allyson pre wedding centerpieces tom and allyson prewedding downpour
A couple of days before the wedding we did a bar/brewery hop around Austin. Second on the tour (I can’t remember the first) was The Draught House Pub and Brewery, one of my favorite places for pints with a really great beer garden. Then we headed to Austin Beerworks which has quickly become one of my favorite Austin breweries (also I know the owner). They open the tasting room Thurs-Sun and you can buy a glass and get 3 pints for $10. That’s a pretty good deal.

We ended our night with some tex-mex at Maudies because when you’re in Austin you need to eat lots of chips and salsa and drink a really big margarita (although perhaps this time I should have gotten a smaller one).

Cheers everybody!

A few weeks ago Walker and I went to Austin for a wedding. We actually had 2 weddings in the span of 3 weeks so I stayed for the entire 3 weeks and Walker came and went for 2 of the long weekends. It’s always so nice to be in Austin where the sun is shining and the nights are warm. Walker’s parents are also in town so we got to spend some time with them and also catch up with a lot of our friends both in town and visiting for the wedding.

The rehearsal dinner for the first wedding was held at Franklin Barbecue. Perhaps you’ve heard of it or seen it in those American express commercials? If not I’ll tell you it’s damn good barbecue and people wait in line for hours every morning to get a taste. If you’re the meat eating type and have the patience I recommend it next time you’re in Austin.

We stood around and drank beers and talked with our friends while we patiently waited for the food. Then we got to get in line and order what we wanted. I always go heavy on the ribs and really light on everything else. (I should also mention that I really haven’t been eating meat but I was really excited for this so I indulged a little or a lot maybe.)

It was a fun and laid back kind of party and a great way to kick off an extended stay in Austin.

Remember my last post about almost getting stuck in the mountains? Well after we were back to safety and after a rest we headed out to a beer bar and reflected over the insane day we had had. Then we met up with some friends of ours that were in town and over dinner told them all about our adventures. It was great to be retelling the story while safe and with good company.

The next day we did our best to salvage what was left of our trip by doing as many fun things in Portland as we could before we hit the road. We went to Blue Star donuts since it was so good the last time I was there. We walked through the Sunday market. I got a baguette. We ate pizza. Walker finally saw that skate park in the city. We went into a bookstore. We walked around. It was a really nice morning and afternoon and the drive back was pretty lovely and sunny. A perfect day for a drive.
